Disassembly/Assembly



Component Notes and information

NOTE:
^ During service procedures, refer to the illustration above and the information below
^ Always replace self-locking nuts and bolts.
^ Welding and straightening work on steering components is not permitted.
^ All components indicated with a (1) should be preassembled away from the vehicle.






1 Cover plate
- Unclip
2 Hex nut
- Tighten to: 67 Nm (49 ft lb)
3 Steering wheel
4 Airbag unit
5 Washer
6 Steering wheel for airbag
7 Hex socket head bolt,
- Tighten to: 6.5 Nm (58 inch lb)
- Always replace
8 Distance bushing
9 Upper trim
10 Steering lock housing (1)
11 Hex bolt
- Tighten to: 50 Nm (37 ft lb)
- 15 mm AF
12 Column tube
13 Hex bolt
- Tighten to: 23 Nm (17 ft lb)
14 Ball bearing (1)
- Drive out with VW 295
- Pressing in refer to Assembly below
15 Shear head bolt (1)
- Tighten until head shears off
- Drill out to remove
16 Lower trim
17 Spring (1)
18 Clamping washer (1)
19 Steering column switch
20 Mounting plate
21 Protective sleeve
22 Hex bolt
- Tighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
23 Self-locking hex nut
- Tighten to: 30 Nm (22 ft lb) + 90°
- Always replace
24 Self-locking hex nut
- Tighten to: 30 Nm (22 ft lb) + 90°
- Always replace
25 Hex bolt
- Always replace
26 Mounting plate with centralizing pin
27 Lower steering intermediate shaft
28 Hex bolt
- Always replace
29 Upper steering intermediate shaft (1)
30 Hex bolt (1)
- Tighten to: 30 Nm (22 ft lb) + 2 turns of 45°
31 Washer (1)
32 Lower spring (1)
33 Steering column tube (1)
- With locking shells for steering wheel lock
34 Distance bushing (1)
35 Support ring (1)

Disassembly

- Drill out steering lock housing securing bolts.






- Pull clamping washer -arrow- and spring off steering column.
-A- Puller, e.g. Kukko 18/0
-B- Separating device 5 to 60 mm, e.g. Kukko 17/0

NOTE: The steering column is pulled away downward, after pulling off the clamping washer

- Pull steering lock housing off column tube and steering column.

Assembly






- Press ball bearing -A- into column tube.
- Slide spacer ring onto upper steering column tube.
- Install support ring into steering lock housing bearing inner race.
- Guide steering column tube into column tube.
- Slide spring and washer onto steering column tube.






- Install universal joint onto steering column tube, ensuring that notch -arrow- in steering column tube spline aligns with hole -a- in universal joint.

NOTE: The components must assemble easily when installing the universal joint on the steering column tube and when inserting the bolts!

- Bolt universal joint to steering column tube.






- Place column tube in vise as illustrated and support universal joint -a- with wooden block on vise.
Push column tube -b- down as far as possible to compresses lower steering column tube spring.
- Tighten vise.
- Install steering lock housing and bolt loosely together with new shear head bolt.
- Install spring with clamping washer onto steering lock housing.






- Drive clamping washer (arrow) on until installation position is achieved.






Installation Position Of Clamping Washer And Steering Lock Housing

- Dimension -a- for clamping washer: minimum 74 mm (2.91 inch)
- Dimension -b- for steering lock housing: 92 mm + 1 mm (3.62 inch + 0.039 inch)

- Tighten shear head bolt -arrow- for steering lock until head shears off.
