Drive Pinion

- Secure transmission housing to 2004 transmission holder
- Place washers between transmission housing and transmission holder 2004 and secure transmission holder with 8 mm bolts.

Conditions:
- Supporting ring for drive pinion bearing is installed and secured.
- Parking lock mechanism and parking lock gear are installed.

Adjusting:

- Place two shims, each 1.5 mm (0.591 inch) thick -arrow- onto drive pinion.
- Place output gear with tapered roller bearing onto drive pinion and tighten hex nut (41 mm AF) to 250 Nm (184 inch lb); engage parking lock when performing this step.

- Position dial indicator -A- and zero indicator with a preload of 1 mm (0.0393 inch).
- Move drive pinion up and down. Read off and record axial play at dial indicator and record (example: 0.93 mm (0.0366 inch)).

NOTE: Do not turn the drive pinion while performing measurement because the bearings will settle and give a false measurement

Determining Shims

- The specified bearing preload is achieved when the reading, 0.93 mm (0.0366 inch), the preload on the bearings, 0.12 mm (0.0047 inch), and the amount for compression, 0.10 mm (0.0039 inch) are deducted from the 2x1.5 mm (0.0590 inch) thick shims.

Example:

- Remove output gear. Determine size of shim from table and install shim onto drive pinion. Table of shims refer to page 39-54.
- Re-install output gear and tighten hex nut to 250 Nm (184 ft lb) and secure with drift.

Checking Friction Torque

- A - Torque wrench, commercially available, 0-600 Nm (0-53 inch lb)
- B - Wrench socket (41mm AF)
- Oil bearing with gear oil.
- Friction torque of new tapered roller bearings must be 80-120 Nm. (7-11 inch lb)
