Battery Does Not Charge While Driving
Battery Does Not Charge While Driving, Checking Resistance For Pre-Exciter Circuit.
Test condition:
- Battery voltage OK.
NOTES:
- When problem is "Battery does not charge" even though the warning lamp comes on when ignition is switched on and goes out when ignition is switched off, check resistance of the pre-exciter circuit.
- Use digital multimeter Fluke 83 (US 1119) and connector test kit VW 1594 for all electrical tests.
- Battery voltage approx. 12V.
- Remove blue wire connector (terminal 61) - near starter - from securing clip and separate connector.
Gasoline engine: Single connector
Diesel engine: Double connector
- Set digital multimeter Fluke 83 (US 1119) to mA measuring range.
- Connect multimeter leads in series between blue wire connector.
- Switch ON ignition.
- Specification: 150 mA to 185 mA.
If the reading is considerably lower than 150 mA, check the blue wire from alternator to instrument duster for excessive resistance and/or replace the instrument panel printed circuit board.
- On completion of check, reconnect blue wire connector and secure clip near starter.
