Output Diagnostic Test Mode (Function 03)
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (function 03)
Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) is a part of the electrical check. The following components can be checked via output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM):
- Speedometer
- Tachometer
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) gauge
- Fuel gauge
- Warning light for brake system
- Indicator lamp for seat belt warning system (if activated via coding)
- Buzzer/chime
- Display indications (odometer, multifunction indicator or digital clock, selector position indicator for automatic transmission)
- Warning lamp for coolant temperature/low coolant level
- Warning lamp for brake pad wear (if activated via coding)
- Warning light for fuel reserve (where applicable)
- Warning light for oil pressure
- If output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) recognizes a malfunction, instrument cluster must be replaced.
- If output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) does not recognize a malfunction, check wires and harness connectors to the instrument cluster.
Initiating output DTM
NOTE:
- If engine is started or vehicle is moved, output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) of the instrument cluster cannot be initiated and will be terminated if in progress.
- Test sequence can be ended at any time by pressing the -C- button.
- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST), select operating mode 1 "Rapid data transfer", switch ignition on and enter address word 17 for "instrument cluster".
After control module identification is displayed:
- Press -> button.

Select function XX
- Press buttons -0- and -3- to select function 03, "output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)".

03 - Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
There are no indications in any displays and all control lamps to be tested switch off.

Analog indicators
The following tests are performed after Q button is pressed:
- coolant temperature needle sweeps through entire display range
- tachometer needle sweeps through entire display range
- speedometer needle sweeps through entire display range
- fuel level needle sweeps through entire display range
After sweep of display ranges, the following fixed values are displayed:
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) gauge: 90°C
Tachometer: 3000 1/min
Speedometer: 100 km/h (62 mph)
Fuel gauge: 1/2
- Press -> button.

Control lamp test Instrument cluster
The control lamps for
- Brake system (low brake fluid, ABS not functioning)
- Coolant temperature/low coolant level indicator
- Brake pad wear (if activated via coding)
- Fuel reserve
- Oil pressure
are activated and remain constantly lit.
- Press -> button.

Seat belt warning light -K19-
Seat belt warning light -K19- lights up (if activated via coding)
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:

Chime
Buzzer/chime is activated: A warning tone sounds in intervals.
- Press -> button.

Segment test
All segments of LCD display in speedometer and tachometer are activated and become visible.
- Press -> button.

Coolant-overheating-test
The safety shut-off- A/C compressor shut-off- is activated approx. 5 seconds later (only for vehicles with A/C system)
No indication in instrument cluster!
- Press -> button.
Indicated on display:

DONE
- Press -> button.
All actual values are displayed again.

- Press buttons -0- and -6-, to select function 06 "End Output".

The tester returns to the "Select function" mode.
