Replacement Engine Control Module (ECM), Adaptation (function 10)
NOTE:
- The Engine Control Module (ECM) is adapted to the control module for anti-theft immobilizer. All newly installed ECMs must be adaptated.
- If there are no authorized ignition keys available, new ignition keys must be prepared and adapted.
- The secret number must be known. If not, determine secret number.
- Adaptation can be interrupted using the "C" button of the VAG 1551 scan tool.
- Before proceeding with adaptation, determine method by which data exchange takes place between the ECM and the immobilizer control module by performing OBD function 08 - Read measuring value block and then use appropriate procedure below:

Requirements
Authorized keys available.
NOTE: If all components are to be replaced, adapt all control modules and use new key set.
- Insert old (authorized) key into ignition lock.
- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST), switch on ignition, select operating mode 1 "Rapid Data Transfer", and input address word 01, "Engine Electronics".
Display indicates ECM identification and coding. (Values displayed here are examples only!!).

Prior to adaptation, new ECMs will display VIN and Immobilizer identification fields with placeholders.
NOTE:
- If ECM being installed was previously adapted for Immobilizer functions, the previous adaptation must be cleared using a Login-procedure.
- The secret number required for the above Login-Procedure must be determined from the ECM's 14-position Immobilizer identification number. After a successful Login-Procedure, proceed as follows:

- Secret number is not accepted. Repeat input.
- 3 attempts at entering the secret number correctly are possible immediately. The next 3 attempts are not permitted for at least 10 minutes. During this time, the ignition must remain on. On Board Diagnostic (OBD) must be also exited using the "End Output" function 06.
- The wait period between each of the next 3 attempts doubles up to the maximum time of 255 minutes.

- Within 60 seconds, switch ignition on.
NOTE: The next time the ignition is switched on, ECM and immobilizer control module recognition is read and saved. After which, starting the engine should only be done after approximately 2 minutes.
Immobilizer III with control module data exchange via "W" Circuit, ECM adaptation
Requirements
Authorized key available.
- Insert old (authorized) key into ignition lock.
- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST), switch on ignition, select operating mode 1 "Rapid data transfer" and enter address word 25 "Immobilizer".
After control module identification is displayed:
- Press -> button.

- Press button -1- twice. This selects the "Login procedure" function 11.
