Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor, Checking

The engine speed sensor -G28- is a speed and reference mark sensor. The engine will not start if there is no speed signal. If the speed signal fails when the engine is running, it will cause the engine to stall immediately.

Test condition
- Perform test when DTC 00513 is indicated

Special tools and equipment
- VAG 1598/18 Test Box
- Fluke 83 multimeter (or equivalent)
- VW 1594 Adapter kit
- Wiring diagram Test sequence







- Disconnect (white) 3-pin Engine Speed sensor connector (arrow).







- Connect VAG 1598/18 Test Box to ECM wiring harness.







- Check for open circuit between Test Box and 3-pin harness connector using wiring diagram, connect as follows:
terminal 1 + socket 67
terminal 2 + socket 68
terminal 3 + socket 56
- wire resistance: 1.5 Ohms maximum







- Check wires for possible shorting to one another.
terminal 2 + socket 56
terminal 1 + socket 56
terminal 1 + socket 68
- specification: infinity Ohms

If wiring OK:
- Replace Engine Speed sensor -G28-. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes

If DTC memory has been erased:
- Create Readiness code. Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes
