Electronic Throttle Control Module: Testing and Inspection




Throttle Valve Control Module, Checking

NOTE: You must perform Function 04 "Basic setting" if the Throttle Valve Control Module -J338- is removed, installed or replaced.

Special tools and equipment
- VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool using VAG 1551/3 adapter cable
- VAG 1598/18 Test Box
- Fluke 83 multimeter (or equivalent)
- VW 1594 Adapter kit
- Wiring diagram

Voltage supply, checking







- Disconnect 8-pin Throttle Valve Control Module connector
- Switch Fluke 83 multimeter to 20 Volts range.
- Connect multimeter between harness connector terminals 3 + 7 using jumper wires from VW 1594 adapter kit
- Switch ignition on.
- specification: 9.0 to 14.5 Volts
- Connect multimeter between harness connector terminals 4 + 7.
- specification: 4.0 to 6.0 Volts
- Switch ignition off.

If specifications not obtained:







- Connect VAG 1598/18 Test Box to ECM wiring harness







- Check for open circuit between Test Box and 8-pin harness connector according to wiring diagram.
terminal 3 + socket 10
terminal 4 + socket 41
terminal 7 + socket 33
- wire resistance: Max. 1.5 Ohms

- Check wiring at 8-pin connector for short to one another.
terminal 7 + socket 10
terminal 7 + socket 41
terminal 4 + socket 33
- specification: infinity Ohms

- Reconnect Throttle Valve Control Module.

If wiring OK:
- Replace Engine Control Module -J220-.
- Read-out Readiness code. Refer to Monitors, Trip and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Readiness Code Checking Testing and Inspection

If DTC memory has been erased:
- Create Readiness code. Refer to Monitors, Trip and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Readiness Code Generating Testing and Inspection

Closed Throttle Position switch, checking
- Connect VAG 1551 (VAG 1552) Scan Tool Refer to Scan Tool Testing/VAG 1551 Scan Tool Testing and Inspection
- With engine idling, press buttons -0- and -1- to select "Engine electronics" address word 01.

- Press buttons -0- and -8- to select "Read measuring value block".
- Press -Q- button to enter selection.

- Press buttons -0-, -0- and -5- to select "Display group number 5".
- Press -Q- button to enter selection.

Display will appear as shown (1 to 4 = Display fields)

- Check Closed Throttle Position Switch (Display field 4).

Display Group 5:






Continuation
- Switch ignition off.







- Connect VAG 1598/18 Test Box to ECM wiring harness.
- Switch Fluke 83 multimeter to resistance range.
- With closed throttle, connect multimeter between Test Box sockets 10 + 33.
- specification: 5.0 Ohms maximum

- Slowly open throttle valve.
- specification: infinity Ohms

If specification not obtained:
- Disconnect 8-pin Throttle Valve Control Module harness connector.







- Check for open circuit between Test Box and 8-pin harness connector according to wiring diagram.
terminal 3 + socket 10
terminal 7 + socket 33
- wire resistance: 1.5 Ohms maximum

- Check wiring at 8-pin connector for shorting to one another.
terminal 7 + socket 10
- specification: infinity Ohms

- Re-connect harness connector.

If wiring OK:
- Replace Throttle Valve Control Module.
- Perform Basic setting.
- Read-out Readiness code. Refer to Monitors, Trip and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Readiness Code Checking Testing and Inspection

If DTC memory has been erased:
- Create Readiness code. Refer to Monitors, Trip and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Readiness Code Generating Testing and Inspection
