Transmission: Electrical Testing

Perform only the recommended test steps listed in the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) table and measured value block test table (targeted entry).

Perform all the measures stated in the column "Corrective action".


NOTE:
- Use the digital multimeter Fluke 83 (US 1119) or equivalent for testing.
- The specified values are valid for ambient temperatures ranging from 0 °C - 40 °C (32 °F - 104 °F).
- If the readings obtained differ from the specified values, determine the cause by using the wiring diagrams.
- If the readings obtained differ only slightly from the specified values, clean the sockets and connectors of the test equipment and test leads. Repeat the test. Before replacing any components, test wiring and connections and, particularly if specified values are below 10 Ohms, repeat the resistance measurement on component.
- Use VAG 1598 test box with VAG 1598/9 adapter cable and auxiliary cables from VAG 1594 for connecting the test equipment.
- The contact numbers of the connector and the socket numbers of the VAG 1598 test box correspond. 4 Speed Automatic 098


CAUTION!
To avoid damage to the electronic components, select the appropriate function and measurement range on the test equipment before connecting the test leads.


Test requirements:
- Battery Positive Voltage (B+) OK.
- Fuses 14 (S14) and 21 (S21) OK.
- Transmission Ground (GND) connections OK:
Ground (GND) connection is located on the left next to the relay panel.
- Check battery Ground (GND) strap and Ground (GND) strap between battery and transmission.
- Turn off ignition for all test steps, disconnect multi-pin connector from Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- and connect VAG 1598 test box to wiring harness connector using VAG 1598/9 adapter cables.
- The Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217- is located in right-hand footwell on A pillar.

Voltage measurement:
VAG 1598/9 adapter cables connected to Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-

Resistance measurement:
VAG 1598/9 adapter cables disconnected from Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-

- If readings obtained differ from specified values, perform measures for corrective actions in right-hand column of test table. 4 Speed Automatic 098
