Steering Column Lock: Service and Repair

STEERING LOCK HOUSING, REMOVING/INSTALLING





This is an exploded view of the steering column switches. The turn signal switch and the windshield wiper/washer switch are held to the mounting for the ignition/steering lock by three screws. The mounting for the ignition/steering lock is held to the steering column tube by the socket-head bolt.

Removing:
1. Disconnect the battery's negative (-) cable. Remove the steering wheel.
2. Remove the Phillips head screws that hold the switch assembly lower housing to the switch assembly upper housing. Then remove the lower housing.
3. Remove the three screws that hold the turn signal switch and the windshield wiper/washer switch to the mounting for the ignition/steering lock.
4. Disconnect the wiring from the turn signal and the wiper/washer switches. Then remove the switches from the steering column.
5. Remove the socket-head bolt that holds the mounting for the ignition/steering lock to the steering column tube. Using water pump pliers, remove the spacer sleeve from the steering column.
6. Unplug the wiring from the ignition switch. Insert the key and unlock the steering. Then remove the ignition/steering lock assembly and the switch assembly upper housing from the steering column.

Installation:
1. Install steering lock housing on the steering column together with the switch assembly upper housing-making sure that the plastic support ring is correctly installed inside the ball bearing, between the bearing's inner race and the steering column. Reconnect the wires to the ignition switch, but install the socket-head bolt only loosely so that the mounting is free to slide on the steering column tube.
2. Drive on the spacer sleeve to the dimension given in "Spacer Sleeve" below. If the spacer sleeve is damaged or loose-fitting. replace it.
3. Install the turn signal switch and the windshield wiper/washer switch on the steering column. Using the three screws, attach the switches to the mounting for the ignition/steering lock. Reconnect the wiring.
4. Using the Phillips head screws, attach the switch assembly lower housing to the switch assembly upper housing.
5. With the steering centered (front wheels pointed straight ahead), reinstall the steering wheel, torquing the nut to 50 Nm (37 ft. lb.). Then, if you have previously removed the ignition/steering lock assembly, pull the steering column switches upward until they contact the spacer sleeve. Working through the access hole in the switch assembly lower housing, torque the socket-head bolt to 10 Nm (7.5 ft. lb.).

Spacer Sleeve:

Spacer sleeve (A) installed for correct clearance Drive on sleeve so that dimension a is 41.5 mm (1.63 in) With steering wheel installed, dimension b should be 2 to 4 mm (1/16 to 1/8 in.).
