Effective immediately, the following tightening procedures are valid for all gasoline engines with M11 cylinder head bolts and all Diesel engines with M12 bolts:
ALL GAS ENGINES WITH M11 BOLTS (12-Point Socket Head)
Engine cold
Step 1 40 N-m (29 ft.lbs.) Step 2 60 N-m (43 ft.lbs.) Step 3 additional 1/2 turn (180~) further in one movement (two 90~ turns are permissible) Note tightening sequence
Note
It is not necessary to tighten the cylinder head bolts at the first service or again after repairs.
ALL DIESEL ENGINES WITH M12 BOLTS (12-Point Socket Head)
CAUTION
Always replace M12 12-point cylinder head bolts
Engine cold
Step 1 40 N-m (29 ft.lbs.)
Step 2 60 N-m (43 ft.lbs..)
Step 3 additional 1/2 turn (180~) further in one movement
(two 90~ turns are permissible) Note tightening sequence
After step 3, warm up engine until oil temperature reaches 50~C (122~F) and tighten bolts 1/4 turn (90~) further in one movement without loosening first. Note tightening sequence
Retorque at 1000 miles after repair 1/4 turn (90~) further without loosening first. Engine may be cold or warm
