Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Remove battery ground cable and positive cable.
2. Remove speedometer cable at transaxle and plug hole.
3. Remove upper engine/transaxle bolts.
4. Loosen left transaxle mount.
5. Install engine support bridge 10-222 or equivalent.
6. Remove rear transaxle mount.
7. Remove drive shafts and tie out of way.
8. Disconnect starter harness (located under heater control valve).
9. Remove starter.
10. Remove transaxle gravel guard and converter cover plate.
11. Detach torque converter from drive plate.
12. With selector lever in P remove selector lever cable.
13. Remove cable bracket, disconnect accelerator cable and pedal cable, taking care not to alter settings.
14. Support transaxle with US 4470 attached to transaxle jack.
15. Remove left engine/transaxle mount.
16. Remove front mount.
17. Remove lower bolt and nut on transaxle.
18. Lift slightly and lower transaxle out of vehicle.
19. Reverse procedure to install. Torque converter must be fully seated on one-way clutch support and be able to be turned by hand. If torque converter should slip off one-way clutch support, it could pull oil pump shaft out of oil pump causing serious damage when bolting transaxle to engine.
20. Torque bolts to following specifications: lower bolt on transaxle, 58 ft lbs; engine transaxle mount, 25 ft lbs; torque converter, 17 ft lbs; drive shaft, 30 ft lbs; upper transaxle bolts, 58 ft lbs
21. Adjust selector lever cable.
22. Check engine/transaxle alignment. If necessary, align engine transaxle mounts with following procedure:
a. Loosen engine/transaxle mount bolts.
b. Shift engine/transaxle assembly from side to side until rear mount is straight.
c. Shift engine/transaxle assembly front to rear until left and right mounts are centered in brackets. (Rear mount must remain straight and free of tension).
d. Torque mount bolts to 25 ft lbs in following sequence: right mount, left mount, and finally rear mount.
e. Move front mount cup until rubber core is in center of cup.
f. Tighten cup bolts to 38 ft lbs
g. Check alignment of exhaust system and readjust if necessary.
Models W/087 Transaxle
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove retaining clip and disconnect kickdown pushrod from relay lever.
3. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle, then remove upper engine/transaxle bolts.
4. Install engine support 10-222A or equivalent, then loosen engine mount bolts.
5. Raise and support vehicle, remove front exhaust pipe, pipe bracket and right driveshaft protection plate.
6. Remove bolts securing inner CV joints to transaxle.
7. Remove starter motor, then remove bolts securing torque converter to drive plate through starter opening.
8. Clamp of coolant hoses at transaxle oil cooler, then disconnect coolant hoses.
9. Remove transaxle filler tube and drain transaxle into suitable container.
10. Remove accelerator pushrod and accelerator cable bracket retaining bolts, then disconnect cable from transaxle, taking care not to alter adjustment.
11. Remove bolts securing selector cable bracket, then disconnect selector cable from transaxle.
12. Remove front subframe bolts, support transaxle with suitable jack and slightly raise transaxle.
13. Remove center bolt from transaxle mount.
14. Remove lower engine/transaxle bolts, then separate transaxle from engine and remove transaxle, ensuring torque converter remains with transaxle.
15. Reverse procedure to install, ensuring torque converter is fully seated in transaxle. When torque converter is properly seated, the face of the torque converter hub should be recessed approximately 10 mm (25/64 inch) from transaxle mounting surface. If converter slips off support, converter may pull pump shaft out of oil pump.
16. Torque engine/transaxle bolts to 41 ft lbs, front subframe bolts to 52 ft lbs, center transaxle mount bolt to 30 ft lbs, torque converter bolts to 22 ft lbs and inner CV joint flange bolts to 33 ft lbs
