Beginning with 1984 production, the Rabbit GTI and 2 door Rabbit GL will not use attaching screws at the bottom of the door panel. Urethane tape coated on both sides will be used instead. This will prevent warping of the door trim panel.
Urethane tape must be used to repair warped door trim panels on earlier models.
Work sequence
- remove door trim panel
- discard lower attaching screws (1983 models)
- apply urethane tape (3M-4046, white, 12.7 mm (0.50 in) wide or equivalent) to door trim panel
^ refer to illustration
^ tape must be 3 mm (0.11 in) from bottom edge of panel
^ do not remove paper backing from tape
- begin installing door trim panel at top of door
- remove paper backing from tape
- finish installing door trim panel, pressing panel firmly at bottom
- glue trim caps over screw holes of old door trim panel (1983 models)
