Ignition timing on some 5-speed CIS vehicles can only be checked and adjusted with tester VAG 1367..

These vehicles are in the following VIN range:

1VWFB0177EV010418 to 1VWAB0170EV064699

If tester VAG 1367 is not available, the flywheel must be marked at 6~ BTDC to allow the use of a standard (strobe) timing light.

Note

Existing 3~ ATDC timing mark in flywheel does not apply to 1984 Model Year vehicles.

Use the following procedure to locate and mark flywheel:

- unscrew plastic plug in timing hole
- turn engine to TDC
- spray flywheel in this area with blue engineering dye
- use dividers or compass to scribe the flywheel 12.0 mm (0.47 in.) to left of TDC mark

Note

Measure from the center of the "0".

- use chiesel to mark measured spot permanently
- check and adjust timing
- reinstall plastic plug
