Vehicles produced since February, 1984 are equipped with modified brake calipers.
CAUTION
When using 6JX14 GTI-style alloy wheels, only use Part No.. 171 601 025H V7U to ensure adequate clearance. Do not use wheels with Part No. 171 601 025K.

- install retaining springs on brake pad carrier before installing pads
Note
Install caliper just until allen head bolts can be started. Pushing caliper further can distort springs causing noise when braking.

^ inner lip seats in caliper housing groove
FIGURE 8 - DUST CAP - OLD STYLE:
^ pressed into caliper housing
FIGURE 9 - DUST CAP, INSTALLING:
- slide dust cap onto piston
FIGURE 10 - DUST CAP/PISTON, INSTALLING:
- lubricate piston and cylinder bore lightly with brake cylinder paste
- install piston and insert inner lip of dust cap into groove in brake cylinder
FIGURE 11 - PISTON, INSTALLING:
- press piston as far as it will go with US 1023/4
CAUTION
Outer lip of dust cap must slip into groove in piston
