Transfer Pump

The transfer pump is located in the fuel tank, and is part of the fuel gauge sender assembly. The pump is cooled and lubricated by the fuel being pumped, and will therefore be damaged if allowed to run dry (running out of gas, or if the pickup strainer gets clogged). The transfer pump is accessed by removing the pump/sender assembly from the top of the gas tank. The access cover is under the rear seat.
Some cars have been recalled for faulty transfer pumps. On these cars, the transfer pump may seize in hot weather and cause the engine to stall. To correct this problem, a revised pump and filter were made available.
