Reverse gear - inadvertent engagement


Inadvertent engagement of reverse gear can be caused by a deformation in the shift lever housing base plate.

The following modifications were made in production to correct the problem and prevent its recurrence:

Golf

^ assembly procedure changed to prevent deformation of base plate from: March 1985, VIN 17 FV 042 779 Up to VIN 17 FV 042 778: replace shifter housing After VIN 17 FV 042 778: see checking on page 2

^ base plate modified to increase lockout contact from: April 1985, VIN 17 FV 050 001

^ new ball socket with additional lubrication in production from: April 1986, VIN 17 GV 058 115

Jetta

^ modified shift lever offset at roll pin for ball and spring from:
February 1986, VIN N/A

^ modified reverse lockout plate from: June 1986, VIN N/A see checking on page 2




Checking

^ check for wear at ball socket if axial play at lever A is more than 1 mm, replace ball and socket, Part No. 191 711 251 A 01C

^ check for excessive play at relay lever B

^ check that clearance between selector "U" bracket (C) and ball is approx. 1 mm

^ check that with shift lever resting on reverse lockout plate, the lever tab (D) must be 1 mm below top of lockout plate (E)

Replace parts that do not adhere to these guidelines.
