Rearhatch, Rear Compartment, Checking For Leaks
Rear spoiler (GTI only) mounting grommetsWork sequence
- close hatch
- using normal water hose pressure, spray water on rear spoiler
- lift hatch, check for leakage
- reseal rear spoiler mounting grommets, as necessary
- close hatch, retest for leakage
Rear wheelhouse
Wet rear compartment carpeting and water in the spare wheel well are caused by a leak in this area.
Work sequence
Left rear wheelhouse shown
- remove rear compartment carpeting
- spray water into rear wheel wells
- check for water leakage into rear compartment
- if leaks are noticed, clean wheel well with additional water pressure
- dry area with compressed air
- use body sealer D 003 500 10 or equivalent to completely seal area of leakage
- recheck for water leakage
Rear washer nozzle, washer fluid container
- check for loose gasket, reseal as necessary
Leaking washer container may cause moisture in rear compartment when no external leak exists.
- check and replace washer system components as necessary
Tall light housings, logos (Golf, GTI shown)
Work sequence
- using normal water hose pressure, spray rear of vehicle
- check for water leakage at tail light assemblies and logos
- reseal with silicone sealer as necessary
- retest for water leakage
Rear hatch weatherstrip, checking for leak
Work sequence
Golf, GTI
- using normal water hose pressure, spray water on hatch area at least five minutes
- note any water leakage around hatch weatherstrip
- at points of leakage check for loose, damaged or warped weatherstrip
- reposition or replace as necessary
- retest for leakage
Jetta, GLI
- using normal water pressure, spray water in rear lid area at least five minutes
- note any water leakage around trunk weatherstrip
- at points of leakage check for loose, damaged or warped weatherstrip
- reposition or replace as necessary
- retest for leakage
