System Quick Check (Engine Will Not Start)

If the engine does not start, the most fundamental step in troubleshooting the ignition system is to determine if the system is creating any spark at the spark plug. If a spark is present, then the problem must lie with some adjustment function of the ignition system, or some other system.
NOTE; Any test set-up other than the one described may cause damage to ignition system components or inconclusive results.
1. Check for spark
a. With the ignition OFF, remove a spark plug wire from a one spark plug.
b. Connect the plug wire to a known good (new) spark plug.
c. Hold the spark plug (with insulated pliers) and ground it against the engine.
d. While cranking the starter, look for a bright blue spark at the spark plug gap.
e. If the spark is a yellow-orange color the spark is weaker and indicates that the system is functioning, but not at its' maximum strength. Check all wiring and terminal connections for looseness or corrosion. If the wiring is OK, check for faulty components and replace as necessary.
2. If no spark is present, test for primary ignition at the ignition coil.
a. Connect a test light between terminal 1 (-) of the ignition coil, and ground.
b. While cranking the engine, the light should pulsate indicating that the coil is receiving primary voltage.
3. If the test light does not pulsate, check the wiring and terminal connections.
