Removal

1. Disconnect the battery ground strap.

Disconnecting Exhaust Pipe:




2. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from front muffler (arrows).
3. Remove deflector for driveshaft and right transmission mount.

Disconnecting Rod Coupling From Steering Rack:




4. Disconnect tie rod coupling from steering rack (upper arrow).

NOTE: Always remove self-locking nuts (below the tie rod coupling) first, then the mounting bolts.

5. Disconnect cable connector for transmission switch (lower arrow).
6. Remove three upper engine/transmission bolts.
7. Disconnect speedometer cable (use tool 3016).

Removing Slave Cylinder Lock Pin:




8. Drive out clutch slave cylinder lock pin (lower arrow).
9. Remove clutch slave cylinder (leave hydraulic line connected).
10. Press shift rod and adjusting rod off ball joints (upper arrows).

Engine Support Tool:




11. Remove hood stops on fenders and attach engine support tool 10-222A or equivalent.

Removing Transmission Driveshaft:




12. Disconnect driveshaft at transmission (arrow).
13. Remove vacuum hoses from servo.
14. Disconnect wiring for differential lock indicator switch and back-up light switch.
15. Remove starter.
16. Remove transmission cover plate.

Right Transmission Mount:




17. Remove right transmission mount (upper arrow).
18. Disconnect right axle shaft at transmission (lower arrow).
19. Support transmission with V.A.G. 1383 or equivalent.

Left Transmission Mount:




20. Remove left transmission mount (lower arrows).
21. Disconnect left axle shaft at transmission (upper arrow).
22. Remove bolts holding front engine stop flange.
23. Remove side engine/transmission bolts.
24. Push transmission back.

NOTE: Check that axle shafts, driveshaft, tie rods and shift linkage do not interfere with transmission removal.

Lowering Transmission:




25. Lower transmission slowly.
