- Volkswagen uses a unique engine code to identify different engine versions, and to distinguish between their different parts and specifications. The engine code is often the single most important piece of information you will need to know about the engine.

- The engine code letters are found on the engine itself, in the first two characters of the engine number. The engine number is stamped on a flat area near the top of the engine block, just below the lower edge of the cylinder head. It is just above the crankcase breather, near #3 cylinder.
