Premature and uneven front brake pad wear below 15,000 miles could be caused by the master cylinder.

A constant light pressure applied to the front calipers, especially on the piston side (inner) can cause the brake pads to wear prematurely.

The manufacturer has changed the secondary chamber spring rate (in the master cylinder) for a more positive brake release. These changes were incorporated in production as of:

5-23-88 VIN 30JP075557

Note

If the VIN is higher than the above listed number, please complete an EPOS report and send it to your zone office.

If you have a vehicle with premature brake pad wear, check the following:

^ check brake pads for uneven wear

If inner pads (piston side) are worn more than the outer pads:

^ replace the brake pads and the master cylinder under warranty

^ check operation of brake booster according to procedure in repair fiche
Master cylinder, identification

A code stamped in the front of the master cylinder represents the production date of the component. This contains two numbers and two letters as shown below:

Code: 2 Q 1 X Years: W = 1987 X = 1988
Week 21 Y = 1989

The two numbers represent the calendar week of production. The letter between the two numbers represents the work shift which is unimportant. The second letter represents the year of production.

Only install a master cylinder with a week/year code higher than 2 0 1 X

Example: 4 Q 3 W Do NOT install

2 F 3 X OK to install
