Changes to 5-speed manual transmission 020, code letters AGB
MODEL(S):
Golf 16V, all m.y.
Jetta 16V, all m.y.
Scirocco 16V, all m..y.
The following changes to the 020 5-speed transmission, code letters AGB, were made in connection with the introduction of the 1.8L 16 valve engine:
Drive/main shaft
Diameters enlarged in the following areas:
^ splines for clutch disc
^ seals for drive flanges
^ housing holes for drive flanges
^ front needle bearing
Pinion shaft
Revised in the following areas:
^ enlarged diameter for the inner gear teeth of 4th gear
^ additional groove for 3rd gear
Clutch disc
^ inner splines matched to enlarged splines of main shaft
^ for centering, special tool 3178 is required
Circlip for 3rd gear
^ enlarged diameter - the following circlips are available:

020 311 381 H 2.7 clear
020 311 381 J 2.8 copper
020 311 381 K 2.9 brass
020 311 381 L 3.0 blue
Note
Insert the thickest circlip possible when adjusting end play.

Circlip for 4th gear
^ an additional circlip has been added:

Circlip for 5th gear
^ circlip has a locking plate
A = locking plate
Note
The locking plate is installed with the retaining tab in groove. Use only a gear with a groove all around.
Synchronizer rings, 2nd, 3rd & 4th gears
CAUTION
Do NOT interchange synchronizer rings.
Removing transmission (Golf/Jetta California vehicles only)
CAUTION
Remove the engine dampener (arrow) before removing the transmission.
