SUBJECT:
Cold weather start precautions (Supercedes 89-06, dated July 31, 1989)
Adhere to the following precautions to prevent cold start difficulties:
^ battery fully charged
^ check charging system
^ battery terminals free of oxidation and coated with a petroleum jelly (e.g. Vaselines)
^ ensure battery terminals are snugged down tight
^ engine correctly filled with winter oil
^ refer to owners' manual for correct weight and quantity of oil for the climatic conditions the vehicle will be subject to
For example:
At arctic temperatures from -20~ F to +20~ F use SAE 5W-30 or SAE 5W-20 at temperatures from -5~ F to +60~ F use SAE 10W-40 or SAE 10W30
Recommendations for engine starting under extreme cold ambient temperatures (below 32~ F):
At extreme low temperatures your engine will probably start better if you depress the accelerator pedal slightly.
^ switch on ignition ONLY ONCE
^ crank engine until it is running
^ release accelerator pedal
CAUTION Operating the ignition switch two or more times will flood the engine and prevent it from starting because the injectors will inject fuel EACH time the ignition switch is activated.
