SUBJECT:
Noisy disc brakes (Supercedes Technical Information 87-02, July 30, 1987)
Brake noise may result from friction heat and vibration of brake pad materials. Complete and permanent elimination of brake noise is not possible.
^ Inspect the pads and rotors. If they are within factory specifications do not replace.
A reduction in brake noise may be possible by installing self-adhesive shim kit, P/N: 171 698 993, to the backs of the brake pads.
Pad wear is required to accommodate the shim. Worn pad and shim must not exceed the thickness of a new pad.
CAUTION
The shims are effective in reducing brake noise only if they are installed on a clean surface.
^ Before installing shims, remove the backing material on the pads completely down to the metal surface.
^ For vehicles manufactured prior to 1985 M.Y., shims may need to be trimmed for proper fit.
