Subject:
Recall SD
Heat Exchanger Replacement

Dear Service Manager:

Enclosed is the SD recall package, containing all necessary information to perform the heat exchanger recall program.

Effective May 26, 1992, all heat exchanger replacement work must be performed in accordance with the enclosed detailed repair instructions. Please note that these instructions eliminate the removal of the complete evaporator/blower housing and the procedures and the disconnecting and subsequent re-charging of the air conditioning system. Please be assured that the procedures and the associated repair time reimbursement has been verified by retail technicians.

As of the above date, the previously announced reimbursement code of YD is no longer valid. Any repairs that you would have entered into the system using reimbursement code YD must now be processed with Campaign Code SD.

Note:
We would like to emphasize that the coolant fluid must be drained completely during the heat exchanger replacement work and that only Volkswagen-supplied phosphate-free antifreeze be used for refilling the coolant system.

Initially, Volkswagen will mail approximately 30,000 letters to owners of the oldest vehicles affected by the recall, namely early model 1985 cars, instructing them to take their vehicles to the service department for immediate replacement of the heat exchanger. See customer letter marked as Exhibit I. Thereafter, we expect to mail approximately 30,000 to 40,000 letters monthly inviting owners to have the heat exchanger replaced. See customer letter marked as Exhibit III.

Concurrent with initial notification of the first 30,000 owners, Volkswagen will notify the remaining 645,000 vehicle owners, informing them their vehicles is subject to the recall, but asking that they wait for repair until sufficient parts are available. See customer letter marked as Exhibit III.

If owners of affected vehicles who have received notification, but were asked to wait express concern, please repair the vehicle in accordance with the procedures specified by this letter.

We ask that you review this information with your service advisors and technicians.
