Fuel Transfer Pump

To replace the Fuel Transfer Pump:

WARNING: Fuel may be expelled during this procedure. Use a clean rag to soak up any spilled fuel. Do not disconnect any wires that could cause electrical sparks. Do not smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.

1. Disconnect battery ground strap.
2. Remove rear seat bottom.
3. Remove access cover to fuel gauge sending unit.

Tank Sending Unit Connections:





4. Disconnect from fuel gauge sending unit (see image):
#1 fuel supply line to main fuel pump
#2 fuel return line to fuel tank
#3 fuel gauge and fuel transfer pump electrical connector
5. Take note of the installed position of the sending unit before removal. Label hoses for proper reinstallation.

6. Loosen and remove the large lock ring on the fuel gauge sending unit by turning it counterclockwise.
7. Remove sending unit from fuel tank and discard the gasket.
8. Replace transfer pump on sending unit.
9. Inspect and clean the strainer/filter before installing on transfer pump.
10. Install the gauge sending unit with new gasket, be sure to align the matching marks between sending unit and fuel tank. Turn lock ring clockwise until snug.
11. Check position of sending unit, it should face the same way as noted before removal.
12. Reconnect fuel hoses and tighten hose clamps. Reconnect harness connector to sending unit.
13. Reconnect the battery ground strap.
14. Put vehicle in NEUTRAL or PARK set parking brake.
15. START vehicle and check for leaks at the sending unit, repair any leaks immediately.
16. Install access cover and rear seat bottom.
