Automatic Transmission 096, Returning to Basic Setting

CAUTION

Throttle cable MUST be correctly adjusted before performing this procedure. See Repair Group 20 for checking and adjusting information.


Return system to basic setting after the following repairs:
^ engine replacement
^ throttle replacement or cable adjustment
^ throttle valve potentiometer replacement or adjustment
^ transmission control unit replacement

^ switch ignition off
^ connect diagnostic cable VAG 1551/1 for tester VAG 1551:
^ black plug (voltage supply) on black terminal 1 in vehicle
^ white plug on white terminal 2
^ blue plug not used

^ following display will appear:

VAG Self Diagnosis HELP

1 Rapid data transfer

2 Flash code output

^ select operating mode 1, Rapid data transfer
^ switch ignition on
^ read display:

Insert address word XX

^ press keys 0 and 2 (this selects program 02 for transmission electronics)
^ read display:

^ press Q key to acknowledge input
^ read display showing ECU identification, e.g:

095927731 R Digimat 0249

Code 127 WSC131071

^ if display shows

ECU does not respond! HELP

press HELP key to print out a list of possible failures (after eliminating causes of failure, input and acknowledge 02 address word again)

^ press -> key
^ read display

Note

Before performing the "return to basic setting" you must first determine that full accelerator pedal travel is present. Perform the following procedure to digitally display the throttle position and travel. These steps have been taken from the larger procedure of Function 08 "Test value block, reading", based on the latest software as of October, 1990.

^ press keys 0 and 8 (this selects Function 08 for reading test value block)
^ following display appears

^ press Q key to acknowledge input

^ press 0 key two times
^ press Q key to acknowledge input

^ observe value in channel 2
^ must be 0 to 2 in idle position must be 253 to 255 in wide open throttle position


If NO

^ check throttle position at idle and full throttle
^ must be fully closed at idle and wide open when accelerator is fully depressed to floor

If NO

^ check for obstructions such as floor mats etc. relocate as necessary
^ check basic adjustmennt of throttle, adjust if necessary, see Repair Group 25 for additional information.
^ check throttle potentiometer adjustment, adjust if necessary, see Repair Group 25 for additional information
^ check accelerator cable condition and adjustment, adjust or replace if necessary, see Repair Group 25 for additional information
^ perform "Return to basic setting" via VAG 1551 Function 04 as follows
^ press -> key
^ following display appears:

^ press 0 and 4 keys
^ following display appears:

04 Start basic setting Q

^ press Q key to acknowledge input
^ following display appears:

^ enter 0 key two times
^ press Q key to acknowledge input

System in basic setting ->

^ depress accelerator pedal fully to floor for 5 seconds
After 5 seconds, with accelerator pedal fully depressed

^ press -> key
^ release accelerator pedal
^ system has now been returned to the basic setting
