Hall Sender, Checking
HALL SENDER, CHECKING
- remove fuse 18
- fuel pumps must not run during starting or catalytic converter could be damaged
- disconnect power output stage (N 70) harness connector from ignition coil
- connect US 1115 LED tester to terminals 2 and 3 of harness connector using jumper leads from VW 1594 adaptor kit
- operate starter and check for signal from Hall sender (G 40)
If LED flickers
- Hall sender is OK and checking is complete
If LED does NOT flicker
- switch OFF ignition
- disconnect Hall sender harness connector at ignition distributor
- switch Fluke 83 multimeter to 20 Volt range
- connect multimeter to outer terminals of harness connector using jumper leads from VW 1594 acceptor kit
- switch ON ignition
- observe voltage supply to Hall sender from CIS-E Motronic control unit (J 204)
- must be 9 volts minimum
- slide rubber boot (covering Hall sender harness connector) up the wires but leave the connector connected
- connect US 1115 LED tester between center wire of connector and battery positive using jumper leads from VW 1594 adaptor kit
- operate starter and check for signal from Hall sender
If LED flickers
- Hall sender is OK and test is complete
If LED does NOT flicker
- perform Electrical Tests A and/or B in Repair Group D2
- and/or replace Hall sender (G 40)
- and/or replace CIS-E Motronic control unit (J 204)
