Ignition System: Service and Repair
NOTES:
- Self-diagnosis, Output check diagnosis and electrical checking of the CIS-E Motronic injection and ignition system - Repair Group D2
- Only the ignition portion of the CIS-E Motronic system is covered in Repair Group 28. Fuel injection components such as pressure regulator, cold start valve, idle stabilizer valve, etc. are handled in Repair Group 25.
- Observe Safety Precautions
1-Harness connector
2-Throttle body
- with idle* and full throttle switch*
3- Harness connector
- for A/C
- in right side of plenum
4- 10 Nm(7 ft lb)
5-CIS-E Motronic control unit harness connector
CAUTION: ONLY disconnect or connect with ignition switched OFF!
- to disconnect/release holding spring on CIS-E Motronic control unit
6- CIS-E Motronic control unit (J 204)*
- controls fuel injection, Oxygen sensor control, ignition map, knock regulation and Output check diagnosis
- with Fault memory
7- Control unit mounting plate
8- Single pin connector
9- ignition coil power output stage (N 70)
10- Ignition coil
- primary resistance: 0.6 to 0.8 Ohms (between terminals 1 and 15)
- secondary resistance: 6500 to 8500 Ohms (between terminals 15 and 4)
11- Protective cap
12-Interference suppression connector
- 600 to 1400 Ohms
13- Ignition Wire
- check for continuity
14- ignition timing sender (G 4)*
- mounted on cylinder number 4 ignition wire
- installed position: tabs must point toward ignition distributor
15- Interference suppression cap
16- Harness connector
- Ignition timing sensor (G 4)*
- mounted on idle stabilizer valve bracket
17- Distributor cap
-check for cracks, traces of leakage current
- check for wear on terminals
- clean before installing
- check carbon brushes for wear, damage and freedom of movement
18- Harness connector
- for knock sensor II (G 66)*
- mounted on ground strap bracket (item 3)
19- Ignition distributor rotor
- Identification: R1
- 600 to 1400 Ohms
20- Harness connector
- for knock sensor I (G 61)*
- mounted below the oil cooler
21- Knock sensor II (G 66)*
22- 15 to 20 Nm (11 to 15 ft lb)
tightening torque influences knock sensor function
23- Dust cap
24- Ignition distributor
25- Knock sensor I (G 61)*
26- Spark plug(s)
- 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
- remove and install using 3122A
- requires top nut,

- 4000 to 6000 Ohms
28- Removal clip
29- O-ring
- replace If damaged
30- Wiring guide
- for ignition wires
- mounted to intake manifold using brackets
31- Angle bracket
- for ignition coil and CIS-E Motronic control unit (J 204) * ground straps
- mounted between ignition distributor and cylinder head
checked using self-diagnosis
Note: The rotor is glued to the shaft. if the rotor has to be replaced, remove it by destroying it with a pair of pliers.
Carefully remove any adhesive residue from the shaft and glue on the new rotor using adhesive AMV 185 100 01 or equivalent.
1- ignition distributor shaft
pull out after removing pin 7
2- Shim(s)
3- Plastic washer
4- Screw
5- Hall sender
6- ignition distributor housing
7- Pin
8- Locking spring
9- Clutch
before removing, mark position to shaft 1 (driver displacement)
NOTE: During assembly, make sure that the clutch moves easily on the pin and that the play between the clutch and shaft is not restricted.
