Service

During Pre-Delivery Inspection remove the transmission ATF filter and install new 0-ring and banjo bolt, also remove the maintenance booklet insert for ATF filter, Part No. 901 552 147 94

On vehicles which are now in service, the ATF filter and insert for the maintenance booklet are to be removed during the next maintenance service and the banjo bolt, and O-ring installed.

CAUTION
Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Department for latest information.

ATF filter, Removing

^ wrap workshop cloth (A) around ATF filter, loosen filter slightly

^ allow ATF to flow back into transmission

^ remove ATF filter, Part No. 096 409 091 (1) and discard

Note
ATF filters without the turning lugs can be loosened with a strap wrench.

^ wipe ATF off ATF cooler

^ remove filter bolt (2) and discard

^ install O-ring Part No. 096 409 069A, onto new banjo bolt, Part No. 096 409 067A

^ install new banjo bolt (1), with O-ring (3), in place of ATF filter bolt (arrow)

Note
Banjo bolt, Part No. 096 409 067A and 0-ring, Part No. 096 409 069A, is also available as a Kit, Part No. 096 498 067.

^ tighten bolt (1)

^ Torque 40 N-m (29 Ft.Lb.)

^ wipe off excess ATF from transmission case

^ check ATF level (see below)

ATF level, Checking

Too much or too little ATF will affect the operation of the transmission.

The ATF level in the transmission changes with the temperature of the fluid. The Min. and Max. marks on the dipstick are based on an ATF temperature of 60°C (140°F).

Checking conditions

^ vehicle on level surface

^ hand brake applied

^ selector lever in "Park"

^ engine running at idle

CAUTION
Do NOT use fluffy cloths to wipe the transmission dipstick. Use cloths that are clean and lint free.

Note
The ATF level must reach the 20°C mark on the dipstick when cold.

CAUTION
Do NOT overfill. Too much ATF will cause the transmission to malfunction. Always remove some ATF if checking indicates the transmission is overfilled.

Passat Vehicles

Establish the EPROM level of the Digimat ECU installed in the vehicle.

^ connect VAG 1551 Tester to the vehicle (refer to Repair Group D3 of Repair Manual Microfiche)

^ turn on VAG 1551 printer

^ after entering address word "02" read either 1551 display window and/or printer tape noting ECU identification.

^ Digimat EPROM level is the four digit number after the word "DIGIMAT" of the identification

095927731AE DIGIMAT 0609
CODING 127 WSC131071
(0609 is the EPROM level of the ECU)

^ with Digimat EPROM level of less than 0508 installed, use temperature tester VAG 1558 or equivalent, to establish temperature of ATF

^ must be: approximately 60°C (140°F)

^ with Digimat EPROM level of 0508 or higher, use VAG 1551 tester, use "read measuring value block" program 08, group 05, channel 1, to establish temperature of ATF

^ must be 60°C to 80°C
(140°F to 176°F)

^ check ATF level on dipstick and add or remove ATF fluid until fluid is between Min. and Max. marks on dipstick

Note
Use FLUID EVACUATOR EX1 to remove excess ATF from the transmission.

Corrado Vehicles

^ check for correct ATF temperature, use VAG 1551 tester, use "Read measuring value block" program 08, group 5, channel 1, to establish temperature of ATF

^ must be 60°C to 80°C (140°F to 176°F)

^ check ATF level on dipstick and add or remove ATF fluid until fluid is between Min. and Max. marks on dipstick

ATF Level checking when instruments VAG 1551 and VAG 1558 are unavailable

Note
Only if tester VAG 1551 and VAG 1558 are unavailable, is the following procedure to measure the ATF level in the transmission to be used.

Checking conditions

^ vehicle on level surface

^ hand brake applied

^ selector lever in "Park"

^ engine running at idle

^ raise engine RPM. (not to exceed 2,000 RPM) until radiator fan cycles "on" the first time

^ return engine to idle to minimize foaming of ATF

^ apply foot brake, put vehicle into any gear for 2-3 seconds and return to "Park" position on selector immediately after second radiator fan cycle, check ATP level on dipstick, add or remove ATF until level is between 36-40 mm up from bottom of dipstick

^ after second radiator fan cycle, check ATF level on dipstick, add or remove ATF until level is between 36-40 mm up from bottom of dipstick

CAUTION
Do NOT use fluffy cloths to wipe the transmission dipstick. Use cloths that are clean and lint free.

Note
Additional radiator fan cycles will not affect this procedure as long as vehicle engine remains at idle speed.
