Dear Volkswagen Dealer:





This is to inform you of the initiation of a service action campaign involving some 1990-92 (49-states) GLI 16V/GTI 16V and standard transmission Passat vehicles. The affected vehicles are within the vehicle identification number range.

Problem Description
It is possible that some vehicle owners could experience a slightly noticeable hesitation during upshifting through the gears.

Remedial Action
Update, where necessary, affected vehicles with an improved engine ECM. Reduce possible throttle linkage free-play between idle switch actuation lever and throttle lever by installing a special linkage clip.

Customer Notification
Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified directly by Volkswagen United States, Inc. on or about August 12, 1992. A copy of the owner letter is enclosed for your information.

Vehicle Allocation
Prior to owner notification, we will furnish you with a computer printed list of affected vehicles including the names and addresses of owners residing within your area of influence.

This listing includes owner names and addresses obtained from state motor vehicle registrations. Under the law of some states, including regulations set forth by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, vehicle registration information may only be used for recall purposes. Use for any other reason may constitute a violation of state law.





Parts Supply
An initial supply of parts listed will automatically be allocated to you. Additional required parts must be ordered by you from your parts depot.

Additional Campaigns
Some of the affected vehicles may also be involved in an additional corrective action. If so, the respective action code has also been printed on the customer's authorization form. In the interest of minimizing customer inconvenience, please ensure that any such additional action is performed simultaneously upon the customer rendering the vehicle for service. For verification, always check your V-Crest system.

Campaign Authorization In accordance with campaign procedures, Volkswagen United States, Inc. will mail notification letters including authorization forms to all known owners. If a customer inquires about the service action, but does not present an authorization form, please confirm, by accessing the V-Crest system or by contacting your Zone office, that the service action is applicable and, moreover, shows an open status before you commence work. If the sevice action is required, please prepare a blank campaign authorization form W 42 002 3010 and mail it back to VWUS.

Dealer Obligation
It is important that this component update program is carried out expeditiously and to the satisfaction of the customer. Please arrange service appointments to appropriately accommodate customer convenience.

Please provide a copy of this communication to every person in your dealership who has recall-related responsibilities.
