Diagnosis, Fault MEMOD2: Overview

Self-Diagnosis (SD), general information

The CIS-E Motronic control unit (J 204) features Self-Diagnosis (SD) capability. If problems occur at monitored sensors or components, they are stored in fault memory.

Faults related to emissions and safety are stored in permanent memory which must be erased after faults have been eliminated or repaired.

Additional faults that can be recognized by the control unit are stored in a temporary fault memory.

CAUTION

These faults are retained in memory when the ignition is switched OFF, but are automatically deleted when the engine is next started.

The CIS-E Motronic control unit is also equipped with an output check diagnosis function, section D2-40.

CAUTION

If the engine ECU or the transmission ECU has been replaced, or if repairs have been made to the throttle valve potentiometer (vehicles with 4 speed automatic transmission); the system must be reset to its basic setting. See section D2-45.
