Air Bag Systems: Service Precautions

Testing, assembly and repair work on airbag system must only be conducted by trained personnel.
Always observe the following safety measures when working on airbag system:
1. Testing of airbag system is never conducted with a test light or voltmeter. Use airbag tester VAG 1619 or its equivalent and test system in an installed condition.
2. Airbag system components must not be opened or repaired. Always use ``new'' parts.
3. Airbag unit has an expiration date. Date can be found on a sticker behind driver's sun visor. After ten years, airbag system must be replaced. For safety reasons, all other components must also be replaced at this time.
4. If airbag unit or triggering unit has been dropped from a height of 18 inches or more, do not install component into vehicle, replace.
5. Always replace airbag system components which have been mechanically damaged (bubbles, cracks, etc.).
6. Before installing a computer memory saver device on cars with an electronic radio lock, separate the airbag power supply connector. Failure to do so may result in accidental activation of the airbag.
7. Do not leave an undeployed airbag unit unattended if work is interrupted. Install into vehicle as soon as unit is removed from packaging.
8. Always place a removed airbag unit so that the horn pad is facing upwards.
9. Airbag unit must nit be exposed to grease, or cleaned with any type of cleaning agent.
10. Do not expose airbag units to temperatures above 212°F for even brief periods while handling them during a repair process. Keep unit clear of all heat sources.
11. If airbag has been deployed during an accident, replace triggering unit, airbag and spiral spring. Inspect all other components for damage and replace as necessary.
12. Storage, transportation and disposal of airbag units are subject to the laws for flammable solids.
13. Deployed airbag units do not have to be disposed of as a ``hazardous waste'' but can disposed of with other trash, although it is recommended that for conservation reasons it be sent out with automotive metal scrap for recycling.
14. Triggering units contain a mercury switch and must be disposed of in an approved manner.

COMPUTER MEMORY SAVER TOOL

Do not use computer memory saver tool on Cabriolet with Airbag. Using the tool will keep airbag system charged and may cause accidental activation of the airbag unit.
