Diagnosis By Symptom
If difficult starting, poor engine operation or a no start condition exists, check the following conditions before making adjustments or replacing components.1. Remove distributor cap and inspect inside for arcing or carbon tracking.
2. Remove and inspect ignition wires from distributor cap. Ensure terminals are strong and clean. Replace any wires with burned terminals.
3. Measure resistance of ignition wires and distributor rotor. Replace any wires not meeting the following resistance specifications:
a. Spark plug connector resistance should be 4000--6000 ohms.
b. Distributor cap resistance should be 800--1200 ohms.
c. Coil connector resistance should be 800--1200 ohms.
d. Distributor rotor resistance should be 860--1260 ohms.
4. Remove static noise suppressor from distributor cap.
5. Inspect outer surface of distributor cap for arcing and carbon tracking.
6. If carbon tracking is evident, replace distributor cap and suppressor.
