Applies to California cars only

Condition

^ Vehicle appears to lose power.
^ Increased fuel consumption.
^ Malfunction Indicator Lamp comes on.
^ VAG 1551 scan tool indicates knock sensor malfunction, DTC code 00535 (First knock control limit exceeded).

Production

Wiring and connectors are inspected at the factory to verify that connectors (gold plated and tin plated) are matched and that terminals have been correctly assigned within the connector.

Service

In case of customer complaint:
- check knock sensor system with VAG 1551 Scan Tool.
^ If read-out indicates knock sensor malfunction (DTC code 00535):
- check that knock sensor wires are inserted in the correct locations in the 36-pin connector of the ECM and knock sensor harness plug.

Note:
Wiring diagram 91-21 for GTI 8V (Califomia only), contains an error on page 4 . This same error appears in Wiring Diagram Book "Golf, GTI, Jetta, 1991" on page 110. A new, corrected wiring diagram will be issued shortly. Also see Technical Bulletin 28-92-06 for additional information regarding Califomia cars.

- compare plating of terminals in harness connectors and component connectors.
^ if component connector is gold-plated, harness connector must be gold-plated.
^ if component connector is zinc-plated, harness connector must be zinc-plated.
