KNOCK SENSOR REPLACEMENT 1990/91 MODEL JETTA GLI/GOLF GTI-16V


Dear Volkswagen Dealer:


This is to inform you of the initiation of a service action campaign involving 1990 and some 1991 model Volkswagen Jetta GLI and Golf GTI-16V vehicles. The vehicles affected are within the following identification number ranges:


Jetta GLI

WVW___1G_LW000001 - WVW___1G_MW030623

Golf GTI-16V

3VW__21G_MM000001 - 3VW__21G_MM000747


Problem Description

Volkswagen has found that the electrical cables leading to the engine's two knock sensors may have been installed in reverse order during manufacture.

Remedial Action

Replace one sensor and properly connect both sensors.

Customer Notification

VWUS will inform all known owners of affected vehicles directly by first class mail on or about September 5, 1990. Copy of the notification letter is enclosed for your information.

Vehicle Allocation Information

Prior to owner notification we will furnish you with a computer printed list of vehicles containing names and addresses of owners residing within your primary area of influence.
Inventory Vehicles All vehicles affected by this service action and which are in your inventory must be corrected prior to retail.

Parts Supply

An initial supply of the replacement knock sensor, part number 034 905 377A will automatically be shipped to you. Additional required parts must be ordered by you from your parts warehouse.

Time Allowance

The time necessary to complete the corrective work is the following:

^ Install 034 905 377A sensor and connect cables properly 35 T.U.

Additional Campaigns

Some of the affected vehicles are also involved in the QW fuel pump replacement campaign. Owners of these vehicles will receive a single authorization form listing both campaign codes. Please check your V-Crest system or contact your Zone/Distributor office concerning vehicles in your inventory to ensure that both actions are completed simultaneously prior to sale.

Campaign Authorization

In accordance with campaign procedures, VWUS will mail notification letters including authorization forms to all known owners.

If a customer does not present an authorization form, please confirm that the service action is applicable and shows an open status before you commence work by accessing the V-Crest system or by contacting your Zone/Distributor office. If the service action is required, please prepare a blank campaign form W 43 002 3010 and mail the back copy to VWUS.

Dealer Obligation

It is important that you schedule service action appointments with your customers on a priority basis. Please provide a copy of this communication to every person in your dealership who has responsibility for campaigns.
