Section 4 - VAG 1551 Procedure
4. VAG 1551 PROCEDUREInterrogate DTC memory, observe measuring block values check status of ECM and verify customer complaint.
VAG 1551 SCAN TOOL, CONNECTING
Requirements:
^ Battery voltage OK
^ Fuses 5,17, and 18 OK
^ Digifant system ground wires OK (ground connections: engine, transmission, battery and body)
^ A/C switched OFF
- Remove shift lever cover
- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool using VAG 1551/1 adaptor cable as follows:
^ Black connector to black Data Link Connector 1
^ White connector to white Data Link Connector 2
^ Blue Data Link Connector not required
^ The two displays will alternately appear as shown

^ Press the HELP button to obtain additional operating information
^ Press the -> button to step through the program sequence

4.1 TEST-DRIVE
Start the engine and let idle until engine coolant temperature is >80°C
Temperature can be measured using:
Function 08
Display Group 01
Channel 3
Print Function 08:
Display Groups 00 through 05
Roadtest
Caution:
Two technicians should be used for test-drive. One to monitor and use the VAG 1551 and the other to drive the car.
Drive vehicle for about 5 minutes. Engine rpm must exceed 3000 rpm at least once
Accelerator pedal must be pushed completely down at least once
AFTER ROADTEST
Print Function 08:
Display Groups 00 through 05 while at Idle
Note:
Do not turn engine off until the DTC memory is accessed and a printout is made.
Correct all malfunctions as specified in the Repair Manual
