Subject: Pre-delivery/Recall Campaign RK 1991 California Model Volkswagen Jetta Vehicles With Cruise Control Check Lock Nut Torque

Dear Volkswagen Dealer:

This is to inform you of the initiation of a pre-delivery/recall campaign involving some 1991 California model Volkswagen Jetta vehicles equipped with cruise control. The vehicles affected are within the following vehicle identification number range:

3VW__21G_MM017656 - 3VW__21G_MM044087

Problem Description

We have found that the lock nut of the cruise control rod for the operating servo unit may not have been properly torqued during production. An inadequately torqued lock nut could allow the rod adjustment to change and cause the engine idle speed to increase.

Remedial Action

Check lock nut torque and rod adjustment.

Customer Notification

Volkswagen United States, Inc. will inform all known owners of affected vehicles directly by first class mail on or about April 22, 1991. A copy of the owner notification letter is enclosed for your information.





Check Torque of Cruise Control Locknut


^ Open hood of vehicle.

^ Locate cruise control rod (A in Illustration below).

^ Check rod ad-ustment 132+2 mm (B in Illustration below).

^ Check torque of lock nut (C in Illustration below) by using crow foot wrench.

Check even if paint dot is present. Torque should be 2.8 N-m, (24 in.lbs.).

Check Lock Nut Torque


Dear Volkswagen Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Volkswagen has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1991 California model Volkswagen Jetta vehicles equipped with cruise control. Our records show that your car is one of the vehicles involved in this action.

Defect Description

Volkswagen has found that on some vehicles the lock nut of the cruise control rod for the operating servo unit may not have been properly torqued during manufacture. An inadequately torqued lock nut could allow the rod adjustment to change inadvertently. If this happens, the engine's idle speed could increase causing the vehicle's stopping distance to become greater with a potential for a vehicle accident.

Remedy

Your Volkswagen dealer will check the cruise control rod adjustment and re-torque the rod lock nut.

Your Action

Please contact the Service Department of your authorized Volkswagen dealer for an appointment as soon as possible. The necessary work will take approximately one half hour and will, of course, be free of charge.
