Shift Linkage: Adjustments
***THIS ARTICLE INCLUDES CHANGES MADE BY TSB # 349103, DATED NOVEMBER 30 1991***.After January, 1991, an adjustment eccentric was introduced in place of the ball on the gearshift lever.
Shift lever revised as of:
1/91 VIN 1G MW 400 001 (Jetta Wob)
9/91 VIN 1G MM 020 858 (Jetta Mex.)
9/91 VIN 1G MM 018 480 (Golf Mex.)
ADJUSTING SHIFT MECHANISM
1. Position gearshift lever in neutral.

2. Loosen shifter rod clamp bolt, and ensure selector lever moves freely on shifter rod.
3. Remove gearshift lever knob and boot.

4. Position adjustment gauge 3104 or equivalent.
5. With transmission in neutral, align shift rod with selector lever, then tighten shift rod clamp to 25 Nm (19 ft. lbs).
6. Engage 1st gear.
NOTE: To check or adjust the shift mechanism, overcome the freeplay in the shift mechanism by pressing the gearshift lever lightly towards the left hand side.
7. Use a feeler gauge to measure dimension "a" 1.0 - 1.5 mm (0.039 - 0.059 in).
8. If adjustment is required, loosen screw "B".
9. Rotate eccentric "A" until dimesion "a" is correct.
10. Tighten screw "B".
11. Install shift boot and gearshift lever knob.
REMOVING ECCENTRIC
1. Loosen screw "B".
2. Carefully lift lever eccentric "A" off lower part of gearshift lever.
NOTE: Adjustment eccentric "A", may be replaced separately.
INSTALLING ECCENTRIC
1. Push eccentric onto gearshift lever and engage it into lower part of lever.
2. After adjustment of shift mechanism, tighten screw "B".
