Vehicle Damage Warnings

NOTE:
- The A/C system should be serviced only by trained personnel familiar with:
^ Equipment use
^ Related safety procedures
^ Regulations governing the discharging, handling, and disposal of automotive refrigerants
- Always wear safety goggles when charging or discharging system.
- Avoid inhaling fumes when using flame type leak detector. Refrigerant-12 becomes a poisonous gas after coming into contact with an open flame.
- The subassemblies and lines of the air conditioner are filled with difluorodichloro-methane (CF2C12 as a refrigerant. This refrigerant is known under the commercial name of Frigen R-12 or Freon R-12.
- Pressures in excess of 300 psi are created in the system when it is operating.
- R-12 is not poisonous, but in its vapor form it can accumulate in areas with poor ventilation and cause suffocation.
- In vapor or liquid form R-12 can immediately freeze anything it contacts, including eyes and skin.
- Although tests can determine A/C efficiency, it is recommended that all service to the system be left to an authorized Volkswagen dealer or other qualified repair shop.

CAUTION:
- Automotive refrigerant containing CFC's is hazardous to the earth's atmosphere. To protect our environment, use an Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) approved refrigerant recovery recycling unit such as Kent-Moore ACR3, or equivalent, whenever discharging an A/C system.
- Always wear eye protection when working around the system.
- Always be careful that refrigerant does not come in contact with your skin.
- If liquid refrigerant has come in contact with your skin or eyes:
^ Do not rub skin or eyes
^ Immediately flush with cool water for 15 minutes
^ Rush to a doctor or hospital
^ Do not attempt to treat yourself
- Discharge system before performing electric welding on or near vehicle.
- During electric welding, invisible ultraviolet rays are released that penetrate refrigerant lines and decompose the refrigerant.
- Do not steam clean condensers or evaporators. Use only cold water or compressed air.

WARNING:
- Keep refrigerant containers stored below 50°C (122°F) and never drop from high places.
- Avoid inhaling fumes when using flame-type leak detector. R-12 becomes a poisonous gas after coming into contact with any open flame. For this same reason, do not smoke in the presence, or suspected presence of refrigerant gases.
- Do not expose any component of the A/C system to high temperatures (i.e., open flames). Excessive heat will cause a pressure increase which could burst the system.
