Group: 27Number: 94-01
Date: January 20, 1994
Subject:
On Board Diagnostic (OBD) Basic Setting, performing after disconnecting battery
Model(s):
All models, except Fox From 1990 m.y.
Condition
Disconnecting the battery may cause the base setting of Electronic Control Modules having On Board Diagnostic (OBD) (VAG 1551) capabilities to be erased. This may result in vehicle driveability problems.
Engine Control Modules (ECM) and Transmission Control Modules (TCM) are most affected by this condition. For example, transmission shift problems may occur due to improper control signals from the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
Note
The battery is disconnected at least once during transport of vehicles from the factory.
Production
No change.
Service
OBD function "Basic Setting" MUST be performed on Electronic Control Modules having OBD (VAG 1551) capabilities during Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) as specified on the PDI inspection sheet.
Also perform OBD function "Basic Setting" on Electronic Control Modules having OBD (VAG 1551) capabilities whenever a battery has been disconnected or replaced during repair.
Refer to appropriate Repair Manual and/or the Volkswagen On Board Diagnostic Troubleshooting Guide for the applicable OBD "Basic Setting" procedure.
