Subject: Investigation of Accidents with ELRA and Air Bag equipped VW Vehicles

Dear Service Manager:

Approximately one year ago we wrote to you to make you aware of Volkswagen United States' investigation efforts related to the performance of the new passive restraint systems built into our Volkswagen Products. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of these activities and, for your convenience, have restated the contents of our previous letter.

As has been the case in the past, Volkswagen is continually interested in investigating the real world performance of the various new passive restraint systems built into its' products. To meet our investigative needs, we are asking for your assistance in identifying and reporting to us, accidents of which you have become aware and involve the following models:

^ Corrado or Passat models equipped with electrically deployed upper torso restraint (ELRA).

^ Cabriolet models equipped with a supplemental air cushion restraint (Air Bag) irrespective of whether the air bag deployed or did not deploy in the accident.

^ Accidents of any type (frontal, side, rear, roll over).


Please notify us immediately of all such accidents which come to your attention.

Time is of such importance in our investigation, that we ask you to notify us even if your information is preliminary. You may notify us by one or both of the following methods:

Please inform your staff of this activity.

Any member of your staff who reports an accident, which is serious enough to be included in VWUS 's program to monitor the performance of passive restraint system, will be extended the customary recognition as in the past.
