Power window system, Troubleshooting

General Information

Check the following before troubleshooting power windows:

^ Ensure customer is operating power windows according to owners manual.

^ Determine if one, more than one, or all power windows are not functioning.

^ Ensure window lock-out switch is ON (if switch is OFF, rear windows cannot be operated from rear doors.)

^ Ensure retained power supply (ignition OFF) for windows is interrupted by opening the driver or passenger front door.

Note
Refer to the appropriate wiring diagram when performing all troubleshooting.

Power window control unit, J139

Controls the following:

^ One-touch down window operation (relay is energized approximately eight seconds during operation.)

^ Automatic closing of windows during vehicle locking from outside door lock.

^ Retained power supply (ignition OFF) for windows until either front door is opened.

Circuit breakers/fuses

^ S43 (20A) circuit breaker for power window motor operation (located in auxiliary relay panel above fuse/relay panel.)

^ S14 (10A) fuse for power window control unit (located in fuse/relay panel.)

Test Conditions

^ Battery OK (charged)
^ Front door contact switches (driver and passenger side) OK
^ Fuses OK





Tools required:

^ Use multimeter Fluke 83 (US 1119) for all electrical tests





^ Use connector test kit VW 1594 for all electrical test connections

^ Jumper wire:
Prepare 5 inch long 14 AWG wire and crimp to both ends 6.3 mm spade terminal

^ Toggle switch jumper:
Use 25 Amp toggle on/off switch and connect to switch terminals 3 inch 14 AWG wire ends with crimped on 6.3 mm spade terminals





^ Use Sun VAT 40, Sun VAT 60 (shown) or equivalent for current draw tests





All windows do not operate from door locks or control switches





All windows do not operate from retained power OR all windows still operate AFTER front doors have been opened





Windows DO NOT operate from central locking outside door lock but DO operate from control switches





Right front window does not operate





Left front window does not operate





Right rear window does not operate








Left rear window does not operate








Windows do not operate from driver side control switches





Front windows do not operate from driver side door control switches (from 10/90 production)





Rear windows do not operate from dash switches





Left rear window does not operate from control switch on left rear door





Right rear window does not operate from control switch on right rear door





Right front window does not operate from control switch on right front door





Illumination light in control switch does not function
