Removal

CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with an anti-theft radio, make sure you know the correct radio activation code before disconnecting the battery.

1. Disconnect the battery ground strap.
2. Remove radiator cover.

Engine Mounting Bolts:




3. Remove 3 bolts "A" at mount "B" for engine, right side.
4. Remove ground (GND) strap, if present, from engine/transmission bolt.

Connection For Speed Sensor And Back Up Light Switch:




5. Vehicles with electronic speedometer: disconnect connector from sensor (arrow 1).
6. Disconnect connector for back-up lights (arrow 2).
7. Disconnect all other electrical connections and ground wires from transmission and from engine/transmission mounting bolts.

Selector Cables:




8. Remove balance weight "A", if present.
9. Remove shift cable "B" from gearshift lever.

NOTE:
- Up to transmission build date 02 09 1: Disconnect selector cable from relay lever.

- From transmission build date 03 09 1: Disconnect selector cable "C" at carrier/relay lever by pulling tab in direction of arrow.

Selector Cable:




10. Remove cable bracket bolts (arrows) at transmission.

Clutch Slave Cylinder:




11. Vehicles with hydraulic clutch controls need to remove clutch slave cylinder and lay to one side. Secure with wire.

CAUTION: Do not disconnect brake line or open clutch hydraulic system. Do not depress the clutch pedal. If necessary, first unclip hose line from cable bracket.

12. Vehicles with mechanical speedometer need to remove speedometer driveshaft on transmission.
13. Remove engine/transmission upper attachment bolts.

Bolt For Transmission Mount:




14. Remove hex bolt "A" on mount "B", for transmission.

NOTE: Hex bolt for the left mount is difficult to access. If necessary, remove overflow reservoir for cooling system.

Transmission Support:




15. Remove transmission support "A" from transmission.
16. Remove plug connector attachment plate (if present) from front transmission bracket.

Transmission/Engine Mount:




17. Remove nut "A" for front transmission bracket "B".

Engine Support:




18. Mount lifting device in conjunction with supports 10-222A.
19. Slightly tighten engine/transmission support assembly via spindles.
20. Remove sound deadening pan located below engine/transmission assembly, if present.
21. Remove the starter.
22. Vehicles equipped with power steering: before removing lower mounting bolts for starter, disconnect power steering hose from transmission. Press hose forward over bonded rubber bushing for front bracket, then tie aside.
23. Remove front bracket.

Balance Weight:




24. Bolt balance weight "A" (if present) to bracket at powertrain.
25. Disconnect exhaust system behind exhaust pipe.
26. Disconnect axle shafts from axle flanges (both sides).
27. Turn steering completely left, to stop.
28. Tie axle shaft aside, as high as possible.

CAUTION: Do not damage axle shaft surface protection.

29. Push engine/transmission assembly as far as possible to the right.

Transmission Mount:




30. Remove transmission bracket "A" from transmission.
31. Remove transmission bracket mounting bolt "B".
32. Raise engine/transmission assembly via spindles, until exhaust system contacts heat shield.

CAUTION: Take care not to damage bracket for operating cables.

Transmission Jack:




33. Position expansion jack, engaging it carefully at site "A".
34. Press engine/transmission assembly rearward to bulkhead.

CAUTION: Do not damage power steering hose.

Transmission Mount:




35. Remove lower mounting bolt "B" (identified in previous illustration).
36. Lower engine/transmission assembly into previous position via spindles.
37. Place assembly in angled position, using left spindle.
38. Remove small cover plate for clutch. The plate is located behind right axle flange.
39. Remove bolt at engine/transmission mount, above right axle flange.
40. Position transmission jack, along with transmission support 3282 and 02A transmission adjustment plate 3282/8 with holding elements.

Adjustment Plate:




41. Place 02A adjustment plate 3282/8 on transmission bracket 3282.

NOTE: Adjustment plate fits in one position only. Arrow symbol "B" on plate points in driving direction.

42. Align arms of transmission support with holes in adjustment plate.
43. Install holding elements "A" according to diagram on adjustment plate.
44. Place transmission jack under vehicle.

Transmission Adjustment Plate And Jack:




45. Align adjustment plate parallel to transmission and position safety bracket against transmission.

NOTE: If transmission support 3282 is not available, the transmission can be removed and installed with transmission jack VAG 1383 A.

46. Remove engine/transmission lower attachment bolt.
47. Push engine/transmission assembly slightly frontward. In this position, pry transmission from dowel sleeves and lower carefully.

CAUTION: Do not pinch the power steering hose while lowering the assembly.
