Tie rods, removing/installing
Removing
CAUTION
To avoid damage to the rack and pinion, DO NOT attempt to remove tie rods from an installed steering gear
^ Remove steering gear from vehicle
^ Seal hydraulic line openings with plastic bags and adhesive tape
^ Seal hydraulic ports in steering gear, 1 and 2, with plastic sealing plugs
^ Clean steering gear
^ Loosen clamp and push boot back
^ Clamp steering gear in vice and remove tie rods, use soft jaw covers in vice to protect rack teeth
Note
Ensure that parts will not be damaged reassembly. Remove the old locking compound from the tie rod threads and from threaded hole in rack, as follows:
^ Use die (M14 x 1.5) or wire brush to clean threads at end of tie rod
CAUTION
When starting the die onto the threads, do not tilt the die. If the die is difficult to turn or if metal shavings form, the threads have been damaged.
^ Seal opening in steering gear (arrow) with clean rags
^ Use tap (M 14 x 1.5) to clean threaded hole in rack
^ Clean oil/grease residue from threads using thinner L 160 or equivalent
^ Clean threads with compressed air
^ Remove rags from opening in steering gear
Installing
^ Check/adjust length of left tie rod
Tie Rod:
^ Vehicles with G60 engine and 185/60 or 195/60 tires:
a = 379.5 +/- 1 mm (14.94 +/- 0.039 in.)
The Corrado G60 was also produced with 205/60 tires. The steering stroke is reduced on these vehicles due to the revised inner tie rod joint, therefore, the turning circle is slightly larger.
1 Inner joint of tie rod for Corrado G60 with 205/60 tires - contact surface A without offset
2 Inner joint of tie rod for all other Corrado G60 models - contact surface A with offset
^ Vehicles with G60 engine and 205/60 tires:
a = 383 +/- 1 mm (15.01 +/- 0.039 in.)
Tie Rod:
^ Vehicles with VR6 engine:
a = 406.0 +/- 1 mm (15.01 +/- 0.039 in.)
Note
Adjust toe on the right tie rod only.
New left tie rods must always be checked/adjusted for the correct length before installing
When ever the length of the left tie rod is disturbed by the removal/replacement of the tie rod end, it must be readjusted to the correct length specification.
^ Apply one drop of locking compound D6 (or equivalent) to two threads in hole of steering rack (arrow)
^ Thread on tie rod and tighten to 70 Nm (52 ft lb)
^ Check boot for wear (slits, cracks) and check sealing surfaces for cleanliness
^ Turn tie rod end to installation position
^ Install pressure compensating line
^ Install boot and seat (arrows) without damaging label A
^ Use only new clamps of original specification and tension with pliers VAG 1275 or KD 424
^ Install steering gear in vehicle and adjust toe on right side only - see Repair Group 44 in Repair Manual
Note
Always check that steering boots are installed without being twisted (arrows).
