Instrument Cluster / Carrier: Service and Repair
NOTE: The [1][2]instrument cluster can be removed without removing the instrument panel, however, the instrument cluster must be removed to remove the instrument panel.
- Disconnect the negative (-) terminal from the battery.
- Remove the center console.
NOTE:
^ On manual transmission cars, first remove the gearshift lever knob and the gearshift boot.
^ On automatic transmission cars remove the selector lever cover plate.
First Type:
Second Type:
- Depending on the center console (first type or second type), remove the retaining screws and partially remove the console. Separate any electrical connectors from behind.
- Remove fasteners at center console (A) and disconnect wiring (B).
- Remove center console.
- Remove the lower-left instrument panel tray by removing the screws.
NOTE:
^ With full-length trays it is necessary to remove two screws securing the fuse panel to the tray.
^ On models with passive restraint there may be a knee bar. Kneebars are held with two bolts at either end.
- Remove the speedometer cable by reaching behind the [1][2]instrument cluster and pinch the cable retaining clip, sliding it off the cable end. Pull the cable from the cluster.
- Remove the steering wheel and lower steering column cover.
- Remove the heating and ventilation control head from the instrument panel.
- Pull the control levers straight out, unclip the trim plate, disconnect the wires to it, and remove the plate. Then remove the three control head mounting screws.
- Remove the radio, if applicable.
- Pry the electrical switches from the center of the instrument panel trim plate and remove the switches by disconnecting the electrical connectors.
- Remove the instrument panel trim plate. The plate is held in place by the retaining screws.
- Remove the two [1][2]instrument cluster retaining screws, and partially remove the cluster.
- Working from the rear, disconnect all electrical and vacuum connections, and label the vacuum lines.
- Remove the [1][2]instrument cluster.
NOTE: Installation is the reverse of removal.
