Caution: Always disconnect the battery ground strap before working on the electrical system.
Note: Before disconnecting battery, obtain radio code for radios with anti-theft coding.
1 - Plenum chamber cover

3 - Gasket
- Between instrument panel and intermediate piece.
4 - Intermediate piece
- Replacing: remove instrument panel and items -5- to -14-.
5 - Heat exchanger
- Removing: remove instrument panel and items -5- to -14-
- Installing: Service and Repair
- After removal replace all coolant.
6 - Air distribution housing
- Replacing: remove instrument panel and items -5- to -14-.
7 - Air duct with main shut-off flap
- Replacing: remove instrument panel and items -5- to -14-.
- Disassembling and assembling: Service and Repair
8 - Fresh air blower series resistance with fuse -N24-
- Replacing: remove glove box and shelf.

- Replacing: remove center console, bracket for instrument panel, cover for footwell -10- and footwell vent -11-.
19 - Rear duct
- Replacing: remove center console, bracket for instrument panel, cover for footwells -10- and footwell vent -11-.

Fig. 1 Fresh Air Blower Series Resistance With Fuse -N24-, Removing:
- Press retainer spring (arrow) down and pull series resistance down.
Note: To install, lightly lubricate retainer spring and contact area.

- Bend tabs down with screw driver, turn blower clockwise and remove.

Removing:
- Remove control panel trim -3-.
- Remove instrument trim -2-.
- Pull out heater controls -1- with cables from instrument panel.
Installing:
- Secure cables to removed controls.

- Turn vent -2- horizontally -arrow- and press down.
- Remove vent housing -1-.

Service installation kit for dust and pollen filter, Part No. 357 819 631, installing
The following parts must be installed additionally:
- Vent, left, Part No. 357 853 830A
- Vent, center, Part No. 357 853 845A
- Vent, left, Part No. 357 853 829A.
CAUTION: Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Department for the latest part information.
Note: In vehicles up to VIN 31 M 240 000, also install water separator, Part No. 357 819 415A.
