Cooling System Draining and Filling

Cooling System, Draining And Filling

NOTE:
The cooling system is filled all-year -round with a mixture of water and anti-freeze and corrosion protection G11.

G11 and other coolant additives marked "in accordance with TL VW 774 B" prevent frost and corrosion damage, formation of chalk and also raise the boiling point of the coolant.

For these reasons the cooling system must be filled all-year-around with anti-freeze and corrosion protection agents. Because of the higher boiling point the coolant is needed for the engine to operate efficiently at high loads especially when the outside temperature is high.

If you replaice the radiator, heat exchanger; cylinder head or cylinder head gasket, do not reuse the old coolant but replace all of it.

Draining
- Slowly open cap of coolant expansion tank to release pressure.

- Remove drain plug at coolant line refer to item 25 in "Engine Component Layout And Replacement". Engine Component Layout And Replacement

- Press top radiator hose down.

- Fill with coolant to max. mark of expansion tank -arrow-.

- Start engine and let idle, at the same time fill coolant up to overflow hole in the expansion tank.

- Close expansion tank.

- Run engine until fan starts to run.

- Check coolant level and top up if necessary. When the engine is at normal operating temperature, the coolant level must be on the max. mark. When the engine is cold the level should be between the marks.
