Removal
CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with an anti-theft radio, make sure you know the correct radio activation code before disconnecting the battery.1. Disconnect the battery ground strap and remove the battery.
2. Remove air filter assembly.
3. Remove radiator cover.
Engine Mount Bolt:
4. Remove bolt (arrow) first, at mount for engine, right side.
5. Remove bracket "A" for plug connector, if applicable.
6. Disconnect ground (GND) strap from engine/transmission bolt, if present.
Connection For Speed Sensor And Back Up Light Switch:
7. Disconnect connector from speedometer sensor (arrow 1), and connector for back-up lights (arrow 2).
8. Disconnect all other electrical connections and ground cables from transmission and from engine/transmission mounting bolts.
Selector Cables:
9. Remove balance weight "A" and disconnect shift cable "B" from gearshift lever.
10. Disconnect selector cable "C" at carrier/relay lever, by pulling tab in direction shown (arrow).
Selector Cable:
11. Remove cable bracket bolts (arrows) at transmission.
Clutch Slave Cylinder:
12. Remove clutch slave cylinder and lay to one side. Secure with wire.
CAUTION: Do not disconnect brake line or open clutch hydraulic system. Do not depress the clutch pedal.
13. Remove engine/transmission upper attachment bolts.
Bolt For Transmission Mount:
14. Remove hex bolt "A" on mount "B", left, for transmission.
15. If necessary, remove overflow reservoir for cooling system.
Transmission Support:
16. Remove transmission support "A" from transmission.
17. Remove plug connector attachment plate (if present) from front transmission bracket.
Engine Mount Bolt:
18. Remove bolts "1" for bracket and "2" for transmission mount.
Engine Support Tool:
19. Mount engine support bridge 10-222A and adapter.
CAUTION: Before installing the retaining hooks for the lifting device, disconnect all hoses and wiring in the vicinity of the engine lifting eyes, to prevent damage.
20. Slightly tension engine/transmission assembly via spindles.
21. Remove cover in front of engine timing belt guard.
22. Remove sound deadening pan below engine/transmission assembly.
23. Remove the starter.
NOTE: Before removing the lower starter mounting bolts, first disconnect the power steering hose at transmission.
24. Remove front bracket.
Balance Weight:
25. Remove balance weight "A", if present, to powertrain bracket.
26. Disconnect exhaust system in front of catalytic converter.
27. Disconnect axle shafts from axle flanges, turn steering to full-left lock and tie axle shafts aside as high as possible.
CAUTION: Do not damage axle shaft surface protection.
28. Push engine/transmission assembly as far as possible to the right.
Transmission Mount:
29. Remove transmission bracket "A" from transmission.
30. Remove transmission bracket mounting bolt "B".
31. Raise engine/transmission assembly via spindles, until the exhaust system just contacts the heat shield.
CAUTION: Take care not to damage bracket for operating cables.
Transmission Jack:
32. Position expansion jack, engaging it carefully at site "A", as illustrated.
33. Press engine/transmission assembly rearward toward bulkhead, noting location of power steering hose.
Transmission Mount:
34. Remove lower mounting bolt "B" (identified in previous illustration).
35. Lower the engine/transmission assembly into previous position via spindles.
36. Place assembly in angled position, using left spindle.
37. Remove small cover plate at clutch, located behind right axle flange.
38. Remove bolt at engine/transmission mount, above right side axle flange.
39. Position transmission jack, along with transmission support 3282 and 02A transmission adjustment plate 3282/8 with holding elements.
Adjustment Plate:
40. Place 02A adjustment plate 3282/8 on transmission bracket 3282.
NOTE: Adjustment plate fits in one position only. Arrow symbol "B" on plate points in driving direction.
41. Align arms of transmission support with holes in adjustment plate.
42. Install holding elements "A" according to diagram on adjustment plate.
Transmission Adjustment Plate And Jack:
43. Place transmission jack under vehicle.
44. Align adjustment plate parallel to transmission and position safety bracket against transmission.
NOTE: If transmission support 3282 is not available, the transmission can be removed and installed with transmission jack VAG 1383 A.
45. Remove engine/transmission lower attachment bolt.
46. Pry transmission from dowel sleeves.
NOTE: Transmission with cover must make slight contact with left side longitudinal member.
Engine Support:
47. Using support fixture 3300, push engine far enough frontward that it touches the engine mount.
48. Lower the transmission, keeping it level with repeated spindle adjustments.
