Ignition timing, checking/adjusting

^ Engine oil temperature at least 80°C (176°F)
^ Ignition switched OFF





- Connect VAG 1367 ignition tester using VAG 1367/8 inductive pickup adapter.
- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) using adapter harness. Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool
- Start engine and run at idle.
- Operate Scan Tool by following instructions indicated on display.
- Press button -1- for "Rapid data transfer" operating mode.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Press buttons -0- and -1- to enter address word 01 for "Engine Electronics."
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Press buttons -0- and -4- to select "Basic Setting" function.
- Press -0- button to confirm input.

- Press button -0- twice to enter display group number 00.
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.

* Disregard numbers appearing in the display.

- Check ignition timing.
^ Checking value: 4-8° before TDC

- Aim strobe light at timing mark -arrow-
^ Checking value: 4-8° before TDC

- If necessary, loosen and turn distributor to adjust.
^ Adjusting value: 6±1° before TDC

- Tighten distributor, recheck timing, and adjust again it necessary.
- Press => button.
- Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function.
- Press -0- button to confirm input.

If value in display field -1 - does not drop, conduct electrical test, Electrical testing, test step 13 Pinout Values and Diagnostic Parameters
